Every big moment in my journey started with a simple "YES"
The YES Effect
“Saying yes didn’t mean I wasn’t scared—it just meant I showed up anyway.”
- The YES Effect
Willingness
It had only been four months since I arrived in Australia when I received an email about nominations for the role of International Students Convenor at UTS. I remember thinking, “I’m so new here. Who would even vote for me?” But, I just went for it. I had no expectations—just the willingness to say YES.
I submitted my name, not knowing what would come out of it. On voting day, I found out I was the only one running. That YES, as simple as it was, opened a door I never imagined. Supporting the voice for international students, standing up for their rights, and to be part of a community was a great experience.
Perspective
During the university’s faculty and academic board elections, I thought about running for a position within my faculty. I even began planning what I could contribute. But then I backedout. I realized I couldn’t give my 100%—especially not with the on-ground campaigning that was needed at the time. So, I made a choice to say NO.
When the results came out, I found out no one had actually contested for the spot. If I had just submitted my name, I would’ve been selected—no campaigning needed. I wasn’t upset. I didn’t actually have the capacity to commit to that role, so it was the right decision.
But it taught me something really important: if there’s something you truly want, never let the effort it might take stop you. If I had wanted that position and said no just because I didn’t want to “go all in,” I would’ve lost it before even trying. Sometimes, the only thing standing between you and an opportunity is the decision to show up.
My First Job
If I hadn’t said yes to this, I would’ve never gotten my first-ever job as an SEO Specialist for an Australian influencer.
Before even coming to Australia, I saw a program (AusLEAP) on my university’s Instagram. They were looking for international students to register for their volunteer program. I thought, “I’m not even in Australia — should I apply?” Then I told myself, “Let’s just say YES — what’s the worst that could happen?” Maybe they’d just tell me to join the next program.
Since everything was done online, I was able to get in — the program was starting later in the year anyway. During the program, I met an incredible facilitator, and we ended up forming a great friendship. I told her, “I’m looking for a job — let me know if you come across anything.”
A few months later, I got a call — thanks to her recommendation — and landed my very first job in Australia!
Let’s break it down
1st - If I had said “NO” to the program and passed it up…
2nd - I would’ve never met the facilitator.
3rd - We wouldn’t have become great friends.
4th - She wouldn’t have known my skills and wouldn’t have referred me for the job.

Then trust me—you can absolutely do it too (and even better than me!).
This was one of those moments when I paused and asked myself—“Does everything I’ve done so far really make sense?” I was reflecting on my journey and the challenges I’ve taken on. Writing this post was my way of reminding myself that I’ve consistently said “YES” to opportunities that challenge me, grow me, and push me closer to discovering myself.
It’s through these “YES” moments that I’ve been able to make effective decisions—especially in the space of international students and my own career development. This post was a personal reflection, which I needed, and a quiet celebration of the impact one can create when they just keep showing up.
Say YES (Not to Everything, Please)
Opportunities are great, but so is your sleep schedule. Be strategic, think about what you gain, what you give, and whether it’s worth your time and energy.
Frequently Assumed Questions
Things I kept asking myself while pretending I had it all figured out
I’m new here and don’t know much about the country. Why would anyone believe in me?
It really doesn’t matter if you’re new or have been here for years. What matters is your effort. If you show up and give your 100%, that’s more than enough.
There are so many options… how do I choose the right one?
You don’t have to pick the perfect one right away. Try a bit of everything, give your best, and see what feels right. Once you explore, the answers will come naturally.
Should I just say YES to everything?
Saying yes is great, but not at the cost of your health or peace of mind. Be smart about it. Balance your time and energy—you don’t need to do it all at once.
Okay, I said YES! Now where’s the result?
I wish it worked like that! But honestly, not every yes comes with a big result. Sometimes you won’t see anything right away, but you’ll always grow and learn from the experience.
